#20 – Horned Lizard
These reptiles look like mythical dragons – without the wings. But instead of shooting fire out of their mouths, they can actually shoot blood out of their eyes!
It’s a defense mechanism because feline and canine predators consider blood to be foul tasting. Birds, however, don’t seem to be affected by this. The horned lizard is able to do this by controlling the pressure of blood in its head. When the pressure gets too high, tiny blood vessels around the eyelids are ruptured and thus the blood will be sent outward – sometimes the pressure is so high that the blood can travel a distance of 5 feet!
